An intergenerational common pool resource experiment
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many renewable resources are in intergenerational common pools, exploited by one generation after another. In our experiment, the stock available to each generation depends on the extent of exploitation by previous generations and on resource’s growth rate, which is either ‘‘slow’’ or ‘‘fast.’’ Subjects show altruistic restraint in exploitation, but not enough to achieve the social optimum. The presence of an intergenerational link induces subjects—both in ‘‘slow’’ and in ‘‘fast’’—to expect less resource exploitation from each other than subjects expect in a single generation control. On average, expectations are too optimistic, especially in ‘‘slow,’’ where intended free-riding behavior is predominant. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Equity versus Warm Glow in Intergenerational Giving
In different treatments of an intergenerational common resource experiment, monetary payoff maximization by each generation causes either negative or positive externalities for future generations. Two behavioral types have been observed previously in single generation games: equity motivated individuals enjoy giving to the needy and taking from (not giving to) the prosperous, while warm glow al...
متن کاملRural Environmental Degradation, Growth, and Income Distribution in a Structuralist Two-Sector Model
The model presented in this paper distinguishes an industrial and an agricultural sector within a developing economy. Environmental degradation results from the overexploitation of a renewable resource due to a common pool externality, which causes agricultural productivity to decline. The model considers a di erentiated peasantry where land ownership and savings behaviour di er across income c...
متن کاملA prescriptive intergenerational-tension ageism scale: succession, identity, and consumption (SIC).
We introduce a novel ageism scale, focusing on prescriptive beliefs concerning potential intergenerational tensions: active, envied resource succession, symbolic identity avoidance, and passive, shared-resource consumption (SIC). Four studies (2,010 total participants) were used to develop the scale. Exploratory factor analysis formed an initial 20-item, 3-factor solution (Study 1). The scale c...
متن کاملOPTIMIZATION OF MULTI PERIOD - MULTI LOCATION CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS CONSIDERING RESOURCE POOL AND BATCH ORDERING
During the past two decades, some industries have been moving towards project-centered systems in many modern countries. Therefore, managing simultaneous projects with considering the limitations in resources, equipment and manpower is very crucial. In the real world, project-based organizations are always facing with two main important features. First, the construction projects are decentraliz...
متن کاملSimulation of Common Pool Resource Field Experiments: a Behavioral Model of Collective Action Short Title: Simulation of Common Pool Resource Field Experiments
We investigate the decision rules adopted by individuals in local communities, whose livelihoods depend on common pool resource stocks and who face the cooperation dilemma in their everyday life. For this purpose, field experiments are modeled and the model structure and output are confronted with experimental data and with the relevant theory of collective action proposed by Ostrom (1998). The...
